Vinyl Flooring FAQs

If you’re searching for vinyl flooring for your home of business, then you’ve come to the right place. Our team are experts in the supply and installation of commercial vinyl sheets and residential vinyl planks.

So what is vinyl flooring? Vinyl flooring is considered to be either homogeneous or heterogenous and comes in long sheets (usually for commercial purposes only), in planks or tiles.

Homogeneous vinyl

Homogeneous vinyl flooring is constructed of the same PCV colour through the entire sheet and is mostly used in the construction of vinyl sheeting. There are no layers, or underlay and is a flat/chip colour finish. Homogeneous vinyl is recommended for projects such as surgeries or anywhere where hygiene regulations need to be adhered to as the sheet can be manipulated to “cove” around the edges of the room.

Heterogeneous vinyl

Heterogeneous vinyl is constructed of multiple layers generally consisting of:

  1. A backing that helps create a bond with the subfloor and assists with acoustics.
  2. A stability layer which is generally constructed from fibreglass.
  3. A design layer of either timber, oak, concrete or stone.
  4. A transparent wear layer to protect the floor from wear and tear.

Some vinyl manufacturers can include other layers and surface protection.

If you find yourself asking, is vinyl flooring good? First, we need to understand the project, investigate the current flooring/subfloor and discuss the purpose that your new flooring will need to serve. We recommend booking a free measure and quote with our team to determine if vinyl flooring is a good solution for the job.

All of the vinyl sold at One Source Flooring is manufactured by industry leaders, each with their own benefits and warranties. Below, we cover some of the benefits and disadvantages found with vinyl flooring.

PROS

CONS

Vinyl flooring is

  • scratch-resistant,
  • Durable and resilient,
  • Waterproof.
  • Child and pet-friendly.
  • Comes in realistic designs,
  • And is considered to be more affordable than some other flooring alternatives.

Vinyl flooring:

  • Requires a smooth and plain subfloor for installation.
  • Doesn’t look as realistic as other alternatives such as hybrid planks.
  • Can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
  • Has a lesser impact on home resale value.
  • Has a shorter lifespan than timber alternatives.
  • Planks can not be repaired, they must be replaced.

At One Source Flooring, we supply and install quality vinyl planks from leading international manufacturers. Again, the best type of vinyl plank flooring depends on the scope of the project and the purpose of the space.

Karndean

Karndean offers award winning vinyl in an assortment of colours. As industry leaders, their products have superior backing, stability and protection with a lifetime warranty. Karndean also offers their own unique K-Guard+ Surface Protection, providing a more hygienic and durable finish.

Frontier

Heartridge

Heartridge offers standard and luxury vinyl planks that are low maintenance and easy to clean. They are soft underfoot and are inspired by genuine timber flooring. Both options come with a lifetime structural guarantee and come with a .55mm wear layer – ensuring they stand the test of daily family life.

Interface

Interface is a global flooring company, delivering high-quality products to the Australian market. All Interface LVT (vinyl tiles/planks) come with a Ceramore coating and superior acoustic performance. With a .55mm wear layer and 15 year wear warranty, Interface vinyl is a popular choice for Gold Coast locals.

Polyflor

MiPlank is designed purposefully for Australian homes and busy families. Featuring longer, thicker planks, MiPlank is easy to install and quiet underfoot. Featuring a PUR coating and a .55mm heavy duty commercial wear layer, MiPlank is designed to last.

Preference Floors

Preference Floors vinyl planks are smart and fashionable, ideally suited to our fast paced, modern lifestyles. 100% Waterproof, robust & dimensional stable, their planks are available with two different thicknesses and come with a 25 Year Limited (Lifetime) Structural Warranty.

When you’re on the hunt for quality vinyl flooring, there are a few things that you should consider. These include:

The condition of your subfloor

Depending on the subfloor material, you may need to select a specific type of vinyl. Karndean and Interface are the only brands we offer that you can install over yellow tongue, reducing your floor preparation. If you currently have tiles down and need a flood coat during floor preparation, you may need to go with a 2mm plank.

The height of your adjoining rooms

Depending on the floor preparation required and your subfloor, you may need to select a specific thickness for your vinyl, so it’s close to the height of your adjoining rooms. We can work around this though—it’s best to discuss any differing room heights with the team.

Manufacturer’s warranties

Depending on how long you want the floor to last, it’s important to choose a plank that not only has long structural and surface warranties.

Design and embossing

For most people, this is the most important factor. We offer free in-home measure and quote appointments so you can trial different colours in your home. Not only do our planks come in different finishes (timber, stone, concrete etc) and colours, there are also different types of embossing—some appearing more realistic than others.

Vinyl flooring is a popular flooring choice in Gold Coast homes due to its timber-look appearance, durability, waterproof qualities and its ease of installation. Firstly though, like all flooring types, it’s important that the base underneath your new vinyl flooring is properly prepared. It’s here where many DIY jobs become unstuck, so engaging with a professional vinyl flooring installer like One Source Flooring is recommended.

By selecting vinyl planks (in particular, the thinner 2mm planks), you must ensure that your subfloor is impeccably smooth. Bumps and ramping are easily visible and can be an unfortunate side effect of ill-prepared floors.

Like any flooring product, the cost of vinyl flooring is dependent on the design, manufacturer and quality of the vinyl flooring that you selected. It’s important to note that while you will see an advertised vinyl flooring cost based on metres squared, the total cost will ultimately come down to the amount of boxes you will need to purchase.

Some key determining factors of your vinyl flooring cost include:

  • Vinyl planks with life-like timber embossing and grains generally cost more than cheaper, plastic-like vinyl flooring.
  • Wider or longer planks generally cost more than shorter boards.
  • Some manufacturers are innovative, taking the time to develop and enhance the construction of the vinyl floor layers—offering products that can be guaranteed for a longer period of time. While going with a ‘cheaper’ option  may save you upfront, it can cause issues in the long term due to failure in the flooring.

If you’re looking for both supply and installation costs, you’ll need to consider your floor preparation costs too.

  • Do you need your existing flooring professionally removed or can you do it yourself?
  • Is your subfloor in good condition, ready for new flooring?
  • Or does the existing floor need to be flooded and levelled?
  • Do you need help moving furniture prior to your flooring being removed?
  • Do you need to add a moisture barrier?
  • Does your skirting need to be removed and replaced?
  • Do you want your vinyl flooring to also be laid on your staircase?

All of these factors can affect the total of your vinyl flooring cost. To get an accurate quote, we suggest booking a free in-home measure and quote with the experts at One Source Flooring.

Vinyl floors are one of the easiest floors to clean as they are waterproof and durable. If you’re looking for tips on how to clean vinyl floors, you simply need to vacuum or sweep regularly, and mop up any spills. We recommend using a hard flooring cleaner such as Pureflor, which:

  • Contains a soap free, multi enzyme formula designed to destroy and break down grease, oil and food waste
  • Eliminates odours by destroying the organic matter
  • Is pH neutral, non-corrosive and safe for all surfaces not harmed by water
  • Is designed to discharge down drains, where the enzyme formula will continue to attack the grease and food waste. Septic safe.

When you purchase your vinyl flooring through One Source, we also provide the manufacturers care and maintenance guides, so we recommend reviewing these prior to cleaning your floors with any chemicals to maintain your warranty.

Ultimately, discussing whether vinyl flooring is better than laminate flooring comes down to the quality of products and their purpose within your project. Our top-of-the-range laminate flooring is just that—top quality, durable and waterproof (you can even steam mop it!).

If you compare a top quality vinyl with a lower quality laminate, then vinyl may be the better choice for you. Unfortunately, this answer isn’t black and white, so we suggest you drop into our Gold Coast flooring showroom and test-drive our vinyl and laminate flooring for yourself.
